Transforming the School Readiness Study into the KEP Initiative
MDE successfully developed a new, innovative, standards-based assessment model that honors local control via a menu of high-quality tools that can be used to produce a profile of kindergartners and support coherence in prekindergarten through third grade teaching and learning. This approach is flexible in that districts/charter schools may choose from a menu of assessment tools and feel confident that they have chosen a high-quality tool that spans each of the eight domains of learning, as outlined by the ECIPs. This flexibility honors Minnesota's longstanding tradition of local control, allowing districts/charter schools to choose the assessment tool that they feel best meets the needs of their community. The data produced from the KEP can be used by districts/charter schools to guide their practice and programming, as well as inform their World's Best Workforce plans. (author abstract)
